Incarcerated rapper Lil Wayne has set high expectations for his Young Money artist Drake by saying that he hoped Thank Me Later would sell around two million copies in seven days.
Speaking from Rikers Island, Wayne said he wanted Drake to out-sell his record-setting Tha Carter III.
"A million in a week? I need him to do more than Tha Carter III," Weezy adds of his breakthrough album, which sold more than 1 million copies in its debut week. "Like 2 million in the first week. I need him to do 2 million the first week, straight up." (MTV)
Young Money associate Sean Garrett recently told SOHH that a million in seven days was very possible for Drizzy.
"I'm gonna bet a mil. I'm gonna bet Drake sells a mil first-week. It's because I know the anticipation on Drake's sh*t is outta here, it's outta space. Because when you look at everything he's been on, he's done so much for other artists on their sh*t that people are just dying to hear his sh*t. I think he's gonna be all right, I'm gonna put a mill ticket on it." (SOHH Guest Star)
Grammy-winning rapper T.I. believes Drake can sell up to 500,000 copies in a week time span.
"I'm confident in my man," T.I. said about Drake's first-week. "I think if 500 [thousand] was the over, under, I would take the over. Given his potential and his presence, I would. I think that's safe, that's a safe bet. He hasn't put out a dud yet. He hasn't put out a dud, not even as a feature, so I think that warrants about a half [a million]." (Hot 97)
Despite leaking weeks prior to its June 2008 release, Wayne's Carter III managed to sell over a million copies in seven days.
With opening day sales figures of approximately 223,000, the album sold 1,005,545 copies in its first week in the United States. With its first week sales, it is the largest first week sales for any album in 2008 in the United States and the first album to reach the million mark in one week since 50 Cent's The Massacre in 2005.
