G.O.O.D Music associate Rhymefest has chimed in on Kanye West's recent absence from the spotlight following the rapper's televised MTV Music Awards rant last fall.
From Fest's perspective, fans allow corporations dictate their feelings on artists.
"The crazy thing is people hate you, then when you put another album out they like you again," he said in an interview. "I think that we as a people are so force-fed by corporations that we don't know what we want. Yeah, people were mad at Kanye last year, but they're also looking forward to him putting another album out. Soon as the album drops they are going to forget why they were mad in the first place. I think people love Kanye because he speaks his mind and there ain't that many Black men that do that and why we are on it, n*ggas need to stop fronting like that White girl deserved that award. They knew what he was saying and need to cut it out, for real." (XXL Mag)
Earlier this year, Common gave an update on West.
"He's doing really good, man," Common said in an interview. "Kanye is one of the good-hearted brothers in this game. I've seen him do so much for so many people. I can never fix my mouth to say anything negative about him. If I see him do something that I don't feel is right, that's something I'll take care of personally." (MTV)
Ye recently inked a blog posting speaking on the public's critical outlook on him.
"I'M BRIEFLY SADDENED BY NEGATIVE COMMENTS, BUT I HAVE TO REMEMBER THOSE PEOPLE ARE SCARED, INCAPABLE OR JUST PLAIN IDIOTS. WE ARE THE F*CKING ROCK STARSBABY. NO COCAINE, JUST LIFE MY N*GGAS!! WE LIVE IT MAN. F*CK THAT, WE LIVE IT!!! WE LIVE IT SO HARD PEOPLE LIVE THROUGH US! WE REPRESENT YOUR INNER SPIRIT!! IMAGINE THE PRESSURE OF BEING A TRUE ICON. VERY FEW HUMAN BEINGS ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO TAKE CONSTANT HATE!!! I CAN HEAR YOU SCREAMING 'COLOR INSIDE THE LINES!!!' WELL F*CK YOUR COLORING BOOK, COLOR BY NUMBERS APPROACH TO LIFE. AT THE END OF THE DAY WHO ARE WE HURTING??? OH "THE NEW BLACK???" SINCE BARACK IS PRESIDENT BLACKS DON'T LIKE FUR COATS, RED LEATHER, AND FRIED CHICKEN ANY MORE?! LET THE BALL PLAYERS DANCE AFTER THEY SCORE! IT'S LIFE MY N*GGAS, IT'S LIFE! REMEMBER CLOTHING IS A CHOICE. WE WERE BORN NAKED!!! FRESH IS AN OPINION, LOVE IS OBJECTIVE, TASTE IS SELECTIVE, AND EXPRESSION IS MY FAVORITE ELECTIVE. NO MORE POLITICS OR APOLOGIES!!!" (Kanye West's Blog)
At a concert last December, Ye touched on his recent hiatus from the media spotlight.
"I had to get up out this motherf*cker for a second," Ye told the crowd. "I love the game so much and I'm so passionate about it that I just can't take this sh*t sometimes. And if they take everything away from me it wouldn't f*cking matter. Artists be too concerned about their well-being sometimes. Artists be too scared to stand up for something. They scared to lose they f*cking house or they scared to lose their record deal. I sold my soul to the devil, I know it's a crappy deal/At least it came with a few toys like a Happy Meal."
