Former jailed rapper Mystikal has made his official rap comeback alongside singer Lloyd in the new music video, "Set Me Free."
Released over the weekend, Lloyd talked about the visual's meaning for Mystikal's New Orleans fanbase after the rapper was jailed for six years on a sexual battery conviction.
"The stars are aligning in 2010. It's a year of new beginnings ... him being released from prison, me getting free from The Inc.," Lloyd said in an statement. "'Set Me Free' is so much more than a song to us; it's our reality. Like Mystikal says, 'I'm back on the beach, muscle up, b*tch!' ... The track has that 'second line'/brass band sound that you can only get back home in New Orleans. I never made a song that repped for my birth city, and when I wrote the record I had only one person in mind. I wanted to make it authentic, so I went back home during Marti Gras. Me and Mystikal got in the studio, and we knocked it out. The energy was crazy! And as you can see, he hasn't lost a step. Wild Wayne of Q93 [in] New Orleans and Greg Street of V103 [in] Atlanta help bring the collaboration together. It was a blessing to work with a legend that I've admired for years." (MTV)
Speaking in an interview last January, the rapper announced his release from prison.
"I'm back! I'm still tryin' to feel this reality," he said in a radiointerview. "It still almost feels like a dream. Six years off the scene, for most rappers it'd be over with. Man, it's gon' be the beginning for me and I'm finna get my reparations." (Rap-Up)
He also talked about taking a more positive approach to life.
"It was tough. I took it in stride," he said of his situation. "For a while, it felt like, I was gone so long...I'm back and I love y'all and I missed y'all, and I want to send out appreciation for all the fans...I'm going to be doing a lot of positive things." (BET)
Mystikal began serving his time roughly six years ago.
The rap star was imprisoned due to forcing his hairstylist to have sex with him several years ago, as well as an extortion charge. He initially denied the assault crime, until a videotape of the incident was discovered at his home. Mystikal plead guilty to the charges he faced in 2003, and then began a six year prison sentence in Louisiana State Prison system. During his prison sentence, he was also charged and convicted of misdemeanor counts of failing to file tax returns for 1998 and 1999. Mystikal began serving his time after January 16, 2004. (Gather)
