With his new album, Stimulus Package, Freeway is out to prove that he can succeed without help from Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel.
According to Free, he also considers himself a "reality" rapper.
"The new album shows a lot of growth and I feel as though it's like my chance to let everybody know that I can really hold it down on my own," Free said in an interview. "I'm not taking nothing away from nobody, I appreciate all the love I got in the past from people like Jay-Z and Beans and people like that. I gotta stand on my own two and let people know I can do it myself and this is my perfect opportunity -- I'm a reality rapper, so I'm inspired by the things around me, things I see, things like that...I feel the best music I make is the music I'm telling the truth on. Every rapper fabricates a little bit, nobody keeps it totally one hundred because when you're making a movie or something, you gotta exaggerate a little bit." (Cavi NYC)
He is also putting out a collaboration album with Beanie Sigel called Roc Boys.
The Roc Boys are back. XXLMag.com has learned that Beanie Sigel and Freeway will be dropping a collaborative street album next month. The disc, titled The Roc Boys, features 13 tracks and will come out on independent label Siccness Records. It features appearances by DMX, Young Chris and the other members of State Property. Last year, Freeway spoke on the conflict between Sigel and Jay on his song, "Love is a Battlefield."
"I learned when you in t, you should try to get your cake up," Freeway raps. "Half these rap n*ggas girls, without the dresses and the make-up/I was in the hood stressin' with the woes/While my n*gga Beans was doing a year in the wake-up/Everyday I wake up, shootin', robbin'...And I ain't sayin' n*ggas left us in the hood, but we ate our little food, did the dishes, cleaned the plates up/You was eating steak while we was eating Steak Ums/But I never complained, dapped you up and tipped the waiter/Then I, took the Roc, posted up, made a shot/If things ever got hot, worry not, he had the banger on him/Yup, Philly n*ggas live the code...If I can't get the president on the phone, I'm fine, 'cause I got the evidence, the plaques at my home..." ("Love Is a Battlefield")
Free announced plans to drop Stimulus Package last spring.
"It's official, I got the album coming this summer," Free said in a recent video blog. "Freeway. Jake One. The Stimulus Package. It's gonna be crazy, y'all gonna love it. We calling it The Stimulus Package 'cause we stimulatin' hip-hop. We're bringing it back to the real hip-hop...It's gonna be crazy. One producer. One emcee. Y'all gonna love it, trust me man. We putting it together right now." (YouTube)
Stimulus Package is set to come out Tuesday, February 16th.
