Rap newcomer Wale recently spoke on touring with rap mogul Jay-Z and how he almost signed a deal with Def Jam Records when Jay held the presidency.
Wale told television host Mo' Nique this week that he was nearly signed to Def Jam in 2005.
"Jay's my man, like, I met Jay-Z three years ago when he was at Def Jam," Wale explained. "I almost had a situation there but he left. He kept me under the wing and I get to go a lot of places that I probably couldn't afford and eat things I can't pronounce and stuff like that. But touring with Jay, like being the opening act in arenas and it's only 20 percent full, we may or may not have a dressing room, it's good. It's like bieng a freshman on a football team. And I pay my dues, and I think a lot of times artists feel like you're supposed to give it to them." ("The Mo' Nique Show")
Wale recently spoke on being under Jay's Roc Nation with artists like J. Cole and Melanie Fiona.
"Roc Nation is a family so myself, Melanie Fiona, J. Cole -- it's a lot of these new young faces that you'll probably hear a lot more about in 2010 but myself, J.Cole & Melanie Fiona are carrying the flag as far as Roc Nation goes," Wale explained in an interview. "Some of us signed management [deals], some of us signed label [deals] through Columbia I believe. So it's a family, we talk all the time -- it's a family environment. This whole tour has been a family environment...I make what some people believe to be very good music -- and you can never let the hate stop you. I make good music and I make music for the soul." Wale's manager, Dan Weisman, previously explained how Wale is signed to producer Mark Ronson but has agreed to co-management by Roc Nation.
"[It] just sort of happened organically," Weisman said of the new partnership. "Wale went on tour with Jay-Z last summer and got to know the Roc Nation people -- [he] went on tour with Mark Ronson, who was opening for Jay-Z in the U.K. Got to know [Jay] and it just seemed like a good move for him to do that." State Property's Young Chris discussed the possibility of signing to Jay-Z's Roc Nation imprint last year.
"Paper work is everything, so due to the split up with Def Jam, it's taken longer for the deal to happen," Chris said in an interview about their third group project. "Right now we have a deal on the table and it's a toss up between Roc Nation and Interscope...Wherever I go Jay-Z and Mark Ronson are executive producing it together. So that's a great balance."
