Young Money's Nicki Minaj recently addressed feeling pressured to drop a debut album worthy of being considered "masterpiece."
Speaking in an interview this week, Nicki explained why she feels under the gun.
"Well Trina is also doing her thing," Nicki said in an interview. "To answer whether I feel pressure, of course I do and I'm a perfectionist and I want that to be, you know, I want this buzz to meet everybody's expectations, surpass everybody's expectations of the people that do support me. Because you got so many people that don't support you, but to the ones that do, they look at me and they see big things and I don't want to disappoint them. So to say I don't have pressure, I'd be lying, I do. I feel it all the time, I feel like yo, I have to make this a masterpiece." ("On-Air Idiot Show")
She previously hinted at dropping a new single from her upcoming album last month.
"The Young Money single will officially be out in a week or so," Minaj said in an October interview. "My single is slated to come out in November. We already have it, just waiting on the timing. 'I Get Crazy,' that's not my official single. That is a record that was on Beam Me Up Scotty with [Lil] Wayne. New York has been showing it love. Big up to Hot 97. Everywhere actually has been playing it. But it's not my official single. [The single] might be a record called 'Married in the Club. But we'll see." (MTV)
According to Minaj, her solo debut will offer a universal appeal with a variety of sounds.
"As far as the album, I've been working on my album for a very long time," Nicki explained in an interview. "It's being released in the first quarter of next year. And in the meantime, the Young Money compilation album will be out this year. And I'm getting ready to shoot a video for the first single, so you guys can look out for that, it's gonna be crazy. I've been doing a lot of features, you know, a lot of features for a lot of artists and their albums. And that's about it, Beam Me Up Scotty has been very well-received...The album is gonna be geared to everybody. Everybody in the world, not just people in Southside Jamaica, Queens [New York] -- but it's gonna be more of a universal record, no pun intended. It's gonna be pop-sounding stuff, rock-sounding stuff, hip-hop-sounding stuff, just an experimentation..." (Honey Mag)
She officially joined forces with Lil Wayne's label over the summer.
The battle among labels to sign Minaj heightened this summer and finalized with Minaj signing an exceptional and very unique deal with Young Money/Universal, where she retains and owns all of her 360 rights, including merchandising, sponsorships, endorsements, touring and publishing. Lil Wayne asserts, 'I am honored to have Nicki Minaj as Young Money's First Lady. She is a star.' Minaj's debut album is anticipated to be released in early 2010 and will be distributed through Universal Motown. (Press Release)
