The late Michael Jackson's This Is It film has become the highest grossing concert movie of all time banking in over $101 million after its five days in theaters.
Jackson's homage film bypassed the previous concert film crown holder, Miley Cyrus.
Michael Jackson's This Is It grossed $101 million at the world-wide box office over five days, making it the highest-grossing concert film of all time. Sony Pictures paid $60 million to acquire the rights to the film, a behind-the-scenes documentary made from footage captured before the King of Pop's death in June. This Is It dethrones Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour as the top-grossing concert movie. That movie grossed more than $70 million world-wide when Walt Disney Co. released it last year. (Wall Street Journal)
Movie analyzer Brandon Gray said the film's success was predicted early on.
"It was expected to be the top-grossing film," said Brandon Gray, editor at Box Office Mojo. "It probably didn't match the hype surrounding it. It's still a very good opening for that type of a picture. The norm is for those films to do very little business." (Bloomberg)
The film also achieved success from overseas.
This Is It opened to a studio-estimated $68.5 million in 108 foreign territories from Wednesday through Sunday and $32.5 million in the U.S. and Canada, where it started late Tuesday. Its biggest international market was Japan, where This Is It sold $10.4 million worth of tickets, the third-biggest opening of the year in the country behind a Japanese film and "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." Originally slated for limited release, the movie will now be extended through the entire month.
Sony announced today the Michael Jackson concert movie, originally billed as a two-week-only event, will stay in theaters through Thanksgiving weekend. The un-surprise move comes after This Is It led the box-office competition with an estimated $21.3 million Friday-Sunday, and upped its five-day worldwide haul to $101 million. (E! Online)
