Monday, Nov 30, 2009 12:40PM
Lil Wayne's Hurricane Season film, which co-stars Forest Whitaker and Bow Wow, is still en route to hit the big screen after suffering multiple delays and budget difficulties.
According to reports, the film has been awaiting a release date for theaters.
The Weinstein Company initially developed and was set to distribute Hurricane Season starring Bow Wow and Lil Wayne to give the studio a formidable 1-2-punch in the urban film genre. Unfortunately, as we previously reported, The Weinsteins ran into financial difficulty and were forced to shelve a majority of their 2009 slate because they wouldn't be able to afford the distribution and marketing costs. And what about Bow Wow and Lil Wayne's fate in Hurricane Season? Because of the storyline which is more drama and the legit star power which includes Academy Award Winner Forest Whitaker, The Weinstein Company has decided to hold on to the picture and still hopes to release it in theaters. At this time no date is set though. (Wooha News)
The film was initially in danger of becoming a straight-to-video release.
Back in June we exclusively reported that Hurricane Season, the basketball film starring Bow Wow, Forest Whitaker and Lil Wayne was being shelved by the Weinstein Company because the film studio could not afford to market and distribute it. At that time, The Weinstein's were facing dire financial hardship and had invested a big part of their theatrical marketing spend in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds. If Tarantino's film failed, films like Hurricane Season would go from shelved to sold off in a matter of months, Inglorious Basterds will turn a profit as it already has grossed over $140 million world-wide and cost $70 million to make. So what does this mean for Hurricane Season? It means The Weinsteins will have replenished funds to release and market a select few of their upcoming titles and we have the exclusive drop that Hurricane Season is one of them that will be resurrected. Weezy reflected upon his on-screen time alongside Whitaker in the film earlier this year.
"I just finished shooting a movie with Forest too," he said in an interview. "He's a very serious guy. I just spoke to him before he went out there, and he was like, 'You did good in the movie.' Then he goes out there and sings that. I'm like, 'Wow.' Everything was wonderful and just doing it in New Orleans, it being a true story and just contributing in any kind of way, it was great for me." (MTV)
The movie, which began filming last year, co-stars many well-known actors.
Wayne will be joining notable actors including Forest Whitaker, Isaiah Washington and Taraji P. Henson. Aside from sharing screen with those thespians, Wayne will also team up with Bow Wow in film. He has been set to portray an high school student by the name of "Lamont" who is doubtful of what the new basketball team could achieve. (Ace Showbiz)
