Film director Spike Jonze has broken his silence on the recent leak of his Kanye West short film, We Were Once a Fairytale, and said the project landed online without his approval.
In addition to speaking on the leak, Jonze also explained the film's motivation.
"This is the first time it's happened to me," Jonze said about the online distribution, "and it is a weird feeling, like, 'Wait a second -- I wasn't ready to put that out! That's mine. Uh, no, I guess it's not mine anymore.' We rehearsed the night before we shot, and talked about trying to get to that raw place, that sad, pathetic, drunken, lost place. I told him, the more shameless it is, the more pathetic it is, the better. He just went for it. To me, I like him. I like Kanye and I care about him. This video is a side of him. Who knows? I don't know what the reception is going to be, but I love making stuff with him. I love the guy." (The New York Times)
Yeezy took down the film from his daily blog earlier this week.
Rap star Kanye West has apologized to fans after he removed a video directed by Spike Jonze from his website. The 14-minute video - titled We Were Once A Fairytale - features West acting the part of a drunken club-goer, harassing women and stumbling around. It culminates in a brief sex scene before West is seen stabbing himself and releasing a demon from his stomach. (BBC News)
Ye also apologized to his fans with a message and unhappy face posted on the site.
"WE WERE ONCE A FAIRY TALE," he wrote. "- SORRY I HAD TO TAKE IT DOWN : ( " (Kanye West's Blog)
The film made headlines last weekend after being posted on various sites including YouTube.
Spike Jonze, the director behind Where the Wild Things Are, has been working on a short film with Kanye West, called We Were Once a Fairytale. It was supposed to debut on iTunes on September 8th, but has only now appeared online. The eleven minute film shows a drunk/high Kanye at a nightclub. He can't control his emotions and thus flops around between different women, who wants nothing to do with him. (Worst Previews)
