Grammy-winning singer Rihanna has confirmed that her new album will be titled Rated R and has released the project's first official single, "Russian Roulette."
The songbird's record landed online Tuesday (October 20).
Reaction to "Russian Roulette?" Kinda dark. The track opens with a rhythmic heartbeat, alternating, scary-movie staccato piano lines and Rihanna's breathy voice. Sample lyric: "So just pull the trigger/As my life flashes before my eyes/I'm wondering will I ever see another sunrise." It ends with a woman's drawn breath and a gun shot. This ain't your Umbrella-toting, Shia-dating Rihanna of yesteryear, folks. (Wall Street Journal)
Speculation has begun to grow on whether the track is addressing her former boyfriend Chris Brown.
The first single from Rihanna's new album is out...and some think it's about an abusive relationship. The song, Russian Roulette, was actually written by Ne-Yo, but with lyrics like: "As my life flashes before my eyes/ I'm wondering, will I ever see another sunrise?" Some say it's impossible to listen to the song without thinking about Chris Brown. Rihanna's new album, Rated R, comes out November 23rd. (KNX 1070 News)
Images of the singer's photo shoot for the new track have also been circulating online this week.
"Russian Roulette" sees the 21 year-old strip off, posing topless with nothing but a strip of wire wound around her chest to protect her modesty. With her hair slicked back, an eye patch completes the angry look. For one shot she wore fishnet stockings and suspenders, a grey tweed tail coat and thigh-high black leather boots. But no trousers. She was seen strutting down a wooden boardwalk and clinging on to a wire fence while singing. (Daily Mail)
Rihanna associate and singer Ne-Yo has hinted at what fans should expect from Rihanna's comeback project.
"I've heard a good majority of the album...world, get ready," he said in an interview. "That's all I'm going to say. World, get ready...The best and safest way I can say this is that Rihanna has some stuff to say and she's going to say it and she ain't going to make no apologies for it." (MTV)
