The 2009 BET Hip-Hop Awards aired tonight (October 27) and showed rap stars Jay-Z, T.I. and Drake running the show with the most wins including "Track of the Year" and "MVP of the Year."
Aside from the rap threesome, the show also honored the late Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein and awarded artists like singer Rihanna.
Jay-Z led the evening with "Best Live Performer," "Lyricist of the Year" "MVP of the Year" and "Hustler of the Year." T.I. followed with "Best Hip-Hop Collabo" ("Live Your Life"), "CD of the Year" (Paper Trail), "Best Hip-Hop Video" ("Live Your Life") while Drake snagged "Track of the Year" ("Every Girl") and "Rookie of the Year." The show was also ignited by performances from Jay-Z and Young Jeezy.
Other performers on the show included the Goodie Mob, Snoop Dogg and Gucci Mane, who got a chance to perform all his big hits of the last few months, including "Break Up" and "Wasted." Even the legendary Kid 'N Play snuck in a dance step. Some of the most talked-about performances of the night were the ones that didn't happen in-house. Several rap cyphers were taped, resulting in standout verses from KRS-One, Eminem, Nicki Minaj and Joe Budden. (MTV)
Taped earlier this month, Yeezy was absent for the event.
Kanye West was a no-show at last night's 4th annual BET Awards, where he was nominated for nine awards, including best live performer. Also absent from the shindig was rapper T.I., who's currently serving time in an Arkansas prison on a federal weapons charge. The Atlanta rapper was nominated for six awards and took home two, including Album of the Year. (Entertainment Weekly)
T.I.'s girlfriend Tameka "Tiny" Cottle read a message from the rapper while accepting an award.
"Although I'm not there with you all, I'm there in spirit", Cottle read. "My road to redemption is almost over....thanks for the support." Other actor/rappers also scored big at the awards show including gangster rapper turned First Sunday star Ice Cube taking home the "I am Hip-Hop" icon award. Hip hop spinners were also included in the ceremony. Busta Rhymes stood in to collect the award for "DJ of the Year" for the late DJ AM. "I'm honored to accept this," he said. (E! Online)
