Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon has weighed in Kanye West's Video Music Awards rant last weekend and said the rapper was likely drunk or overly confident in himself.
Backing up country singer Taylor Swift, Raekwon said he respected Yeezy but could not appreciate his show-stopping move on Sunday (September 13).
"Why he do that, man?," Raekwon asked in an interview. "Come on man, that was a f*cking little girl, B. It's like nah, that was some sucker sh*t, I ain't respect that right there man. I ain't respect that...Lil Mama was on some Brooklyn sh*t the other night, yeah. I thought she was supposed to come out, nah? It is what it is, I looked at it as a Brooklyn thing. She from Brooklyn, Jay from Brooklyn, you know, I guess they were just feeling themselves right then and there though...I'm sure that everybody ridiculing Kanye or Lil, uh, you nah mean, Lil Mama, [the late Ol' Dirty Bastard] was in the same position. He pioneered that beasting the stage sh*t. He pioneered that, word. And that's my whole, it's like, I like Kanye too, he a cool cat but yo, that right there, he either had to be drunk or he felt like 'F*ck that, I own the awards.' But I don't think that was fair to her as a teenager. It's one thing to do it with some n*ggas, then it's like, 'Aight, cool,' but to do it against a little white pretty little teenager, nah, that wasn't really cool." ("Los Angeles Leakers")
Despite multiple apologies, 50 Cent also took Swift's side and scolded Ye for his on-stage rant.
"That was interesting," Fif said in an interview. "When you nominated for the first time, what you saw from me in 2004 was The Grammy's. When I went up, Evanescence won Best New Artist and it was like, I sold 12 million records. That's the largest debuting hip-hop album today and I was overlooked and I still don't have a Grammy. It's been 13 nominations. It's because I wrote the harsh realities, I've been overlooked, completely. So when you got an artist there for the first time and you go and you wanna tell them, well, you know, Beyonce is great. There's nobody that's confused in that actual area. But Taylor Swift is great and is new at that point and you can't replace it. Even an apology can't replace what it feels like for the very first time receiving that award. Now in her head, 'My first award was Kanye West.' And it's damaging, I wish he would come take one of my awards so I can black his eye and in front of everybody..." (Much Music)
President Barack Obama's off-the-record comments on West's rant landed online earlier this week with the unauthorized release of an audio clip.
"I thought that was really inappropriate! You know? It's like, she's getting an award--what are you butting in? I hear you. I agree with you. The young lady seems like a perfectly nice person. She's getting her award. What's he doing up there? He's a jacka**. Now, now, all this stuff, I'm assuming all this stuff [laughs] come on guys, cut the president some slack. I got a lot of other stuff on my plate..." (YouTube)
Yeezy reportedly spoke with Swift following the country singer's "The View" appearance Tuesday morning.
Representatives from "The View" said West called Swift after her appearance on today's show, and she accepted his apology. Swift later told ABC News Radio, "Kanye did call me and he was very sincere in his apology, and I accepted that apology." (ABC News)
