Nicki Minaj has revealed her plan to release her debut album early next year after the compilation album with Lil Wayne and the rest of her Young Money camp drops.
According to Minaj, her solo debut will offer a universal appeal with a variety of sounds.
"As far as the album, I've been working on my album for a very long time," Nicki explained in an interview. "It's being released in the first quarter of next year. And in the meantime, the Young Money compilation album will be out this year. And I'm getting ready to shoot a video for the first single, so you guys can look out for that, it's gonna be crazy. I've been doing a lot of features, you know, a lot of features for a lot of artists and their albums. And that's about it, Beam Me Up Scotty has been very well-received...The album is gonna be geared to everybody. Everybody in the world, not just people in Southside Jamaica, Queens [New York] -- but it's gonna be more of a universal record, no pun intended. It's gonna be pop-sounding stuff, rock-sounding stuff, hip-hop-sounding stuff, just an experimentation..." (Honey Mag)
She officially joined forces with Wayne's label last month.
The battle among labels to sign Minaj heightened this summer and finalized with Minaj signing an exceptional and very unique deal with Young Money/Universal, where she retains and owns all of her 360 rights, including merchandising, sponsorships, endorsements, touring and publishing. Lil Wayne asserts, 'I am honored to have Nicki Minaj as Young Money's First Lady. She is a star.' Minaj's debut album is anticipated to be released in early 2010 and will be distributed through Universal Motown. (Press Release)
Minaj also confirmed the Young Money move in a statement shortly afterward.
"There's so many people that kind of shut you down as a female before you even get your foot in the door," Nicki said in an interview. "So when you get moments like this it's like 'yes, finally'...A lot of things that could've been on Beam Me Up Scotty weren't because they were quote-unquote too good to put on a mixtape...So I have an arsenal and very soon we'll start releasing stuff." Minaj recently spoke on her relationship with Lil Wayne and how she may have a Rebirth collaboration with the rapper.
"Usually in the beginning [of a session] Wayne would have an idea and I would just write a verse around Wayne's idea," she explained. "However, for the new stuff that you guys haven't heard yet that will probably be on Wayne's Rebirth and the Young Money compilation album -- I went in there and chose beats, did the hook, and wrote my verse. Wayne then came in and loved it and he added his stuff on it, so it all depends on who vibes to the beat first and feels something. I know if I like something I can get an idea in two and a half seconds. So the great thing about Wayne is sometimes he laughs at my crazy a**, because I have these crazy bizarre ideas and he'll be like 'h*ll no'. He's a lot of fun and he's very funny, but on a serious note whenever I do something that I really love he usually says 'Yea, I f*ck with it Nicki.' He allows me to be me and he doesn't really tweak me too much. He doesn't say no, or tell me to re-write stuff, or anything like that. He just allows me to be me and that's what I love about him."
