A snippet from Drake's unreleased "Fear" song has landed online nearly two weeks before the retail release of his So Far Gone mixtape.
While not offering fans a chorus, the leaked preview features Drake paying homage to rap groups Slum Village and Little Brother.
"...but you can feel the pain," Drake raps. "It all comes spilling out like I hit a vein/What up Little Bro[ther], what up Slum Vil[lage]/I hope you know y'all the reason I have fun still/And fans thinking that we all signed for one mil/Equal opportunity, rapping, that sh*t is unreal/That ain't how it works, that ain't how it goes/And I be getting high just to balance out the lows/And I could use a writer just to balance out my flows/But I never share my thoughts, this is all a n*gga knows/And every time I try, it opens up my eyes..." ("Fear")
Drake recently announced plans to re-release So Far Gone for retail purchase and touched on the unreleased track.
"I did this song that no one has ever heard before, ever," he revealed in an interview. "[It's] a song called 'Fear.' I recorded it when I did So Far Gone -- the first verse and half of the second verse I had gotten through. But then I just stopped because it was getting eerie. It was getting where I didn't know if I could [finish it]. And then the other night I had a moment and I finished the song. That's gonna be the last song on the retail [version of] So Far Gone. And the third verse transitions into Thank Me Later. So the last line of the third verse is gonna be the first line on my album." (MTV)
He also wrote via his personal blog to explain reasons behind the profit-based re-release.
"I also want people to know that I am only releasing this EP so that everyone involved in the project can hold a physical copy of the CD in their hands and see it in the store," he wrote Thursday (August 20). "And for anybody else who feels that So Far Gone marked a moment in time I just wanted to give you the option to have the disc. If you got it for free and want to keep it that way than by all means I urge you too. That was a gift from me to you...Thank Me Later." (October's Very Own)
His upcoming EP will be downsized from 17 cuts to 7 which will cut off original collaborations with Omarion and Lloyd.
Tracklisting: 1. "Houstatlantavegas" 2. "Successful" featuring Trey Songz & Lil Wayne 3. "Best I Ever Had" 4. "Uptown" featuring Bun B & Lil Wayne 5. "I'm Goin' In" featuring Lil Wayne 6. "The Calm" 7. "Fear" (2DopeBoyz)
So Far Gone lands in stores Tuesday, September 15th.
