Teen rap star Soulja Boy Tell Em recently spoke on why his music, including hit songs "Donk" and "Kiss Me Thru The Phone," is often criticized and how his signature rap style is unmatched.
In addition to the music, Soulja Boy also said his business skills have always been on point.
"I've always been on my business, ever since I was younger," Soulja Boy said in an interview. "Even though I was 16 years-old in the industry, I always stayed tight. I always watched what I signed, I always read my contracts -- Even though people say I'm gonna be a one hit wonder and all that, I ain't wanna sound like nobody else. I wanna be different than everybody else in this business. That's why my music gets criticized the way it do, it sounds so different. You used to hearing regular music, but if you hear the Soulja Boy song, you just think 'Oh, that's a Soulja Boy song, it's different' and people automatically wanna hate, ride it out. But that's what makes it so successful, it's so different and new." (DUB Magazine)
The rapper's popularity has been displayed recently through his nationwide America's Most Wanted tour performances alongside Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy.
"When they came at me and was like, 'Wayne wants you to be on tour with Drake, Jeezy, a lot of people,' of course I'mma do it," he recently said about being offered a slot on the tour. "My first tour I did was with Chris Brown. Now this is gonna be my second official tour...On this type of tour, you got Young Jeezy fans in the crowd, Lil Wayne fans in the crowd, Jeremih fans in the crowd, Pleasure P fans in the crowd, and this is not the only time you gotta do it. You gotta do it four or five days straight. This is what I'm built for...I try to strive for my best. I respect everybody in the tour, likewise, but I'm trying to have the best show in the tour. I'm gonna stay and watch everybody, though." (MTV)
In addition to an upcoming collaboration with Drake, the Young Money newly signed artist recently talked about Soulja Boy's marketing skills.
"Soulja Boy is the smartest artist of our generation, I think period and I think out of anybody," Drake said in an interview earlier this summer. "Whoever it is, whether it's him or his team or the people around him, whoever has the thoughts to do the things he does, is genius and I'm so happy for him." (YouTube)
Soulja Boy was also praised by rap pioneer Scarface.
"I think the Internet is what's wrong with rap right now," he explained in an interview. "Because it's no way to filter garbage. You say some dumb-a** sh*t, and you get a million hits on your Web site...And Soulja Boy is not included...He getting money and he's my son's age. I like the way he do it. I think he got the potential to be the next Russell [Simmons]. I'm giving him some big-a** shoes to stand beside but if that kid really focus on finding talent and marketing that sh*t like he is now at f*cking 18, 19-years-old, I ain't mad at it." (Vibe)
