Lupe Fiasco,?who made headlines when he announced he would retire from rap after his next release, recently offered details about his upcoming Lasers?album and how he plans to push the envelope even further.
Aside from having won a Grammy for "Best Urban Alternative Performance" from his "Daydreamin''" collaboration with Jill Scott, Lupe described his growth as an artist and ability to now push the hip-hop bar for his audience.
"I feel like, 'cause of my first two albums, that now I have the foundation to just branch off and just do not really crazy [music] or whatever I want, but just make music outside of who I normally make music for," Lupe said referring to his upcoming album. "I feel like I have my true fans, my hardcore fans down, locked down, and now I can kinda experiment with other types of music and it's really good. It's my favorite album thus far." Fiasco previously postponed his retirement from hip-hop by pushing back LupE.N.D., what he planned as his final release, "indefinitely."
"Breaking News...," he wrote in a blog entry last February. "Listen Up This Affects You!!! Due to circumstances beyond my control...the album roll out has changed radically. LUPE.N.D. has been postponed indefinitely!!! As a matter of fact consider it cancelled until further notice!!! OK..so what now??? Actually an album is still coming in June...Thats Right!!!...Drum Roll Please... "THE GREAT AMERICAN RAP ALBUM" Yeah thats the new title..." (Lupe Fiasco's Blog)
He recently announced plans to drop his next album, Lasers, later this year.
Lupe Fiasco joined the vast ranks of artists that utilize mircoblogging for self-promotion. The Chicago rapper tweeted that his upcoming album would be called Lasers, quickly after he said it was titled We Are Lasers. According to one of Fiasco's tweets, "Lasers ...comes from some repressed highschool outcast sh*t...blended amidst 'And He Gets the Girl' ambitions." Fiasco is producing some tracks this time out and aims to nab guest spots from Bun B and Kid Cudi. Longtime producer Soundtrakk will also handle the production duties.." (Prefix Mag)
Fiasco has released two albums since his landing in the hip-hop spotlight around 2005 on Kanye West's "Touch The SKy".
Preceded by the single "Kick, Push," as well as several mixtapes, the album Food & Liquor was set to surface during early 2006, though an unfinished version leaked during the spring, pushing its official release back to September instead. The album earned Fiasco three Grammy nominations. A highly conceptualized follow-up, The Cool, was released in December 2007. (All Music)
A confirmed release date for Lasers has not yet been announced.
