Kanye West has denied all reports that placed him in a deal with Jordan Brand footwear to create another signature sneaker.
While acknowledging his appreciation Nike, Ye denied all gossip tying him to the Michael Jordan-based kicks.
"I LOVE NIKE AND I LOVED CREATING WITH THEM BUT THERE HASN'T BEEN A CONVO WITH BRAND JORDAN....," he wrote Thursday (August 6). "NIKE AND BRAND JORDAN ARE 2 DIFFERENT COMPANIES." (Kanye West's Blog)
Reports landed online earlier this week which connected Ye to the Jordan brand.
According to a pretty well placed source, Kanye is negotiating to design a limited edition pair of Nike Air Jordans. The insider claims that negotiations are still early, but that both sides are excited about working out a deal. No word on whether Ye would be designing the Jordans, or another shoe in the Jordan Brand line. (DimeMag)
Yeezy has name-dropped various clothing lines and brands in his rhymes including Jordan in his 2004 "All Falls Down" single.
"We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em," he raps. "Things we buy to cover up what's inside/Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth/That's why shorty's hollering "where the ballas' at?"/Drug dealer buy Jordans, crackhead buy crack/And a white man get paid off of all of that..." ("All Falls Down")
After the launch of his Nike Air Yeezy sneakers last spring, the rapper expressed his gratitude.
"We out here in Hawaii," Ye said in the April 2009 video. "So I just wanna do a little video blog for y'all right quick. It's so beautiful wouldn't you agree? You can see the clouds and the mountains. But I wanna thank everybody that went out and supported, copped the Yeezys. A lot of people had to pay overpriced, next time when we do the Yeezys 2, hopefully we can do some more but it was real good to get the buzz out there and I really appreciate everybody that went out there and supported it." Prior to their release, Ye revealed his excitement about working with Nike.
"Nike is such an important brand to me," West said in a statement. "Growing up, we looked forward to the release of new Nike's the way we would an album by our favorite artist...I've been designing Nike's in my sketch pad since the fourth grade. So to say I've been prepared for this would be an understatement. The really fun and challenging part for me was learning about Nike's design process, learning more about fabrics and functions and colorways, and all of the details that go into designing a shoe of this quality."
