Grammy-winning rapper Jay-Z has been chosen to headline MTV's Video Music Awards 2009 ceremony next month as its first announced hip-hop performer.

In addition to Hov, other artists including newcomer Lady Gaga have also been chosen to perform.

Jay-Z and Lady Gaga have been booked to perform at the VMAs, joining an already impressive list that includes Taylor Swift, Green Day, Pink and Muse. Jay -- whose gnarly "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" is up for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Male Video -- will perform a song from his hotly anticipated The Blueprint 3 album, due September 11. The glittery Gaga -- who, along with Beyonce, leads everyone with nine VMA nods -- will perform a single from her breakthrough The Fame album. (MTV)

The rapper will also compete against stiff mainstream emcees in the "Best Hip-Hop Video" category at the ceremony.

MTV's Video Music Awards "Best Hip-Hop Video" nominees: Eminem's "We Made You," Kanye West's "Love Lockdown," Jay-Z's "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)," Asher Roth's "I Love College" and Flo Rida's "Right Round." (Press Release)

This year's showcase will be hosted again by comedian Russell Brand.

Russell Brand is returning to host the 26th annual MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 13 from Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Last year, the combination of the relatively unknown British comedian with the seemingly never overexposed Britney Spears paid off for MTV as the VMAs pulled in record numbers for the network. Winners at last year's showcase included Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and Yeezy.

VMA's 2008: "Best Male Video" Chris Brown's "With You," "Best Hip-Hop Video" Lil Wayne's "Lollipop," "Best Dancing in a Video" Pussycat Dolls' "When I Grow Up," "Best Direction in a Video" Erykah Badu's "Honey," "Best Choreography in a Video" Gnarls Barkley's "Run" and "Best Special Effects in a Video" Kanye West's "Good Life."
