Incarcerated rapper Prodigy has reflected on the life of Michael Jackson and the impact the singer has had on his career.
P also spoke on how the public's image of him as a child wearing Jackson's clothing, as exposed by Jay-Z at Hot 97's 2001 Summer Jam, may now change.
"Shout out to Jamie Foxx," P said in an interview. "He did a good job with the BET Awards. He said everybody used to dress like Michael Jackson when they was a little kid. You know I like that part 'cause certain n*ggas 'Oh yeah Prodigy had the 'Beat It' jacket on when he was eight years old,' like tryin' discredit me like there's something wrong with that. Nah, ain't nothing wrong with that and everybody know and it's sad that Michael Jackson had to die but now everybody's professing 'Oh I loved Michael Jackson when I was little too,' oh now it's okay. Rest in peace, Michael Jackson. 'Cause I damn sure thought I was Michael when I was a little kid. I wanted to be Michael Jackson, I wanted to be a celebrity like Michael. He did a lotta things I ain't agree with later on in life but overall that was a good motherf*cker right there." (XXL Mag)
P's boss, 50 Cent, has also shed light on Jackson's career.
"I think everybody was [affected by his death]," Fif explained. "Ain't nobody bigger than Mike. 700 million copies? You do that much, not even that, get away from the actual record sales and look at how long. Some people are made for it, so when you come on and you're a star artist and a hit artist at the same time at five [years old],god d*mn. You got kids out there that are great on the Disney Channel, they ain't got major hit records at that point in this time frame and I guess the dynamics of how we accept entertainment at this point is different too. So it changed things but Mike and them, it's not something that's common or we'd have another one. We don't have another one." (Shade 45)
Aside from Jackson, Mobb Deep associate Nyce recently said Fif was trying to get Prodigy released from jail by the end of this year.
"Shout-out to Fif because that's why I love him so much," he said in an interview. "A lot of people think that Fif is such a bad guy, he a bad guy because he hates you. He's a real good dude and right now he's trying to get P out a little bit earlier like December, January. And I'm really thankful for that 'cause P is the chain that keeps the bike moving. So I definitely respect him for that. I grew up with Fif, [Lloyd] Banks and [Tony] Yayo." (Forbez DVD)
The rapper is currently serving a three-and-a-half year bid for gun possession.
Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years behind bars after pleading guilty to a weapons charge dating back to 2006. Authorities say Prodigy was pulled over in downtown Manhattan after he was spotted driving in the opposite direction on a one-way street in an attempt to claim a parking spot. A search of the car turned up an unlicensed .22-caliber pistol. He will begin his sentence January 2008. (Hip Hop Galaxy)
