Former Wendy Williams radio co-host Charlamagne Tha God has been named the new host of Philadelphia's daily "Morning Beat" show beginning next month.
Radio One executive Elroy Smith has confirmed the decision to bring in Charlamagne to the Philly airwaves.
"Doing an all-music morning show with mixer Bent Roc garnered some of the highest ratings that we've seen in the last year for our morning show on the Beat," Smith said in an interview. "We are presently No. 1 with women 18-34 without doing a traditional morning show. Charlamagne will be brought on board to accent the current success of the 'Morning Beat.' His commanding personality along with his Internet savvy and his desire to be local will only propel this show to a higher plane." (Radio & Records)
Charlamagne has also released a statement regarding his reaction to the move.
"Commanding my own morning show in a major market has been one of my dreams," he said, "and this opportunity that has been presented to me just reinforces in my mind that I am walking the path that God wants me to walk." (Statement)
He was let go from his slot alongside Williams on her popular "The Wendy Williams Experience" radio show last November.
"They say unemployment has surges higher now than it has in the last 25 years, shoppers have turned frugal, the economy is sinking," Wendy said during the announcement of losing a portion of her staff. "The credit problem, financial stresses and everybody is suffering, me, you and everybody. I just want to be honest with you all as honest as I possibly can be....This is not the end of the changes that are happening here." (The Wendy Williams Experience)
Charlamagne previously spoke with SOHH after he was laid off revealing high hopes for the future.
"I've had more radio job offers in the past two days than I've ever had in my whole radio career," he explained. "I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, man. Like, I feel great, I feel relieved. And we're going into '09 and the number nine symbolizes change, and that's what 09 is, the highest level of change." (SOHH)
Charlamagne will begin his new radio slot Friday, May 1 on Philadelphia's The Beat.
