News: De La Soul Doubles Up, Release New Music Via Nike & Apple

After an almost five-year absence, De La Soul have announced plans to release new music in the form of a 45-minute workout collection for Nike and Apple.
The music will primarily focus on athletes with an additional aim on marathon runners.
De La Soul are releasing their new music on April 28 as part of the NIKE+ campaign. The 45 minute long track, which will be released in partnership with Apple, was written specifically for runners, but can be enjoyed by active and sedentary music fans alike. Kevin "Posdnuous" Mercer says working on the tracks and wanting to get the pacing right motivated him to work out more. "I've dabbled in running before, but I got back in to it and would run to test it out," he says. "Nike also has a team of runners on staff who listen to it and give us their opinion." (Billboard)
De La Soul member Trugoy the Dove expressed his motivation for working with both parties.
"When an opportunity presents itself, and it's challenging, it's tasteful and it actually opens doors to new listeners, a new audience, we're up for it," Trugoy explained. In past years, the group has helped design two signature versions of the Dunk SB shoe and performed at multiple Nike outdoor events. (Ad Age)
Other artists known for working with Nike include Kanye West, who recently thanked fans for purchasing his limited edition Air Yeezy sneakers.
"We out here in Hawaii," Ye said in his video blog. "So I just wanna do a little video blog for y'all right quick. It's so beautiful wouldn't you agree? You can see the clouds and the mountains. But I wanna thank everybody that went out and supported, copped the Yeezys. A lot of people had to pay overpriced, next time when we do the Yeezys 2, hopefully we can do some more but it was real good to get the buzz out there and I really appreciate everybody that went out there and supported it." The group's last collection of nationally released music was nearly five years ago.
De La Soul subsequently signed their AOI label to Sanctuary Urban (run by Beyonce's father, Mathew Knowles) and released The Grind Date in October 2004. Two years later the group issued Impossible Mission: TV Series, Pt. 1, a collection of new and some previously unreleased material. (All Music)
