Beyonce's new film Obsessed, co-starring Idris Elba and Ali Larter, debuted at No. 1 over the weekend, raking in over $28.5 million in box office sales.

The singer's latest film topped its competition including Terrence Howard's Fighting.

Screen Gems' obsession with genre pics paid off again for Sony as stalker thriller Obsessed opened to an estimated $28.5 million from 2,541runs to lead another boffo weekend at the domestic box office. Rogue Pictures and Universal's Fighting also debuted better than expected, grossing an estimated $11.4 million from 2,309 runs to come in No. 3 after Obsessed and Warner Bros. holdover 17 Again, which fell to No. 2 in its second sesh. Sony's head of distribution Rory Bruer shared thoughts on the film's success.

"This is the first film where she didn't perform musically," Bruer said of Beyonce. "And what a way to start. I think she showing there isn't much she can't do." (USA Today)

The film's first-weekend profits were nearly double of what analysts originally expected.

The last weekend in April is a kind of movie doggie day-care, where Hollywood stashes its unwanted mutts until they can be unleashed on DVD. Given the low-rent release date of Obsessed, and Sony Screen Gems' refusal to screen it for critics, industry analysts predicted an opening weekend of $15-17 million. Yet the movie, which pairs Knowles with "The Wire" star Idris Elba as her victimized husband, transcended the reliable African-American constituency and lured a broad base of teens and young couples. Beyonce recently discussed the admiration she held towards her character in the film.

"I love this role because in most of these movies the man comes in and saves the day," she said in an interview. "And my character 'Sharon' is the hero. She's strong and doesn't choose to be the victim, call her husband, call the police, hide in the attic, she fights." (Reuters)
