Grammy-winning rapper Wyclef Jean has joined forces with former United States president Bill Clinton to tour Haiti in an effort to help raise international awareness of the country's current struggles.
While in Haiti, Jean also teamed with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to review areas requiring attention.
The delegation that includes Haitian-born singer Wyclef Jean stopped at a school in the capital's rough Cite Soleil neighborhood, once the site of violent clashes between gangs and U.N. peacekeepers, to view a food program for children. Clinton said he was pleased to see efforts such as the program, run by Jean's charity, Yele Haiti, and U.N. World Food Program. (Associated Press)
The Fugees frontman's involvement came at the personal request of Clinton.
"I was honored to show my support when they asked me to join them on this important humanitarian trip which also gave them the opportunity to experience the beauty underneath the devastation my country and its people have had to face. It's crucial for me to do all I can to raise awareness and help Haiti get through this tough time." (Press Release)
By teaming with Wyclef, Clinton aims to spark international involvement from countries including Great Britain and United States.
"We hope by coming here that people back in America and throughout the world will see that Haiti's worth supporting," Clinton said in an interview. "It doesn't have to be the poorest country in the hemisphere, now they have a chance to build a new future." (BBC News)
The award-winning rapper is known for his efforts to improve his homeland including a performance at the Green Inaugural Ball event in Washington, DC last January.
"We are ecstatic to have Wyclef perform on the 17th. As one of TreeHugger.com's 'Top 5 Most Buzzworthy Green Musicians,'" co-producer Stephanie Campbell said in a statement, "he is the perfect fit for an event that is not just green in name, but also in design and implementation." (SOHH)
