Lil' Wayne recently spoke on his Jay-Z laced inspiration to become the "Greatest Rapper Alive."
Weezy discussed his run at being the self-proclaimed "greatest" stemmed from Jay's own claims of being the best.
"Today there's a lot of entertainers that don't know about the grind," Wayne said in an interview... "I didn't get no flack from [saying 'Best Rapper Alive'], of course from the haters, I mean from the man, Jay, he propped me up when he see. He gave me a lot of confidence to put a new song out called 'Greatest Rapper Alive' on my album and motivation was already there. And I felt I had to do whatever I had to do talent-wise to make it what it was." (Music Choice)
The rapper previously gained prime time attention with an interview on Katie Couric's pre-Grammy Awards special last month.
"In New Orleans, reality is handed to you very very early...[Music], for me, was a way of always showing somebody my intelligence...I work very very hard, Ms. Katie. We don't approach things like we're good, we just approach it like we're gonna work and we're gonna work hard and hard works pays off. If you work that hard, then you're gonna get good and good turns to great and hopefully I'm the definition of that." (All Access Grammy Special)
Weezy's success was recently displayed at this year's Grammy Awards.
Lil' Wayne won rap album of the year for Tha Carter III as well as best rap solo performance for "A Milli," rap song for "Lollipop" and rap/sung collaboration for "Swagga Like Us" during the pre-telecast. The artist, who joined Allen Toussaint, Terence Blanchard and Robin Thicke for a musical salute to New Orleans, led the nominee field going into tonight with nods in eight categories. (Billboard)
The New Orleans, Louisiana-bred emcee is reportedly preparing a handful of summer music releases.
Weezy has pushed back the release date of his rock-and-roll LP Rebirth from April 7 to May 19. The video for the album's first single, "Prom Queen," however, has been shot and should be released soon. In addition to Rebirth, Wayne is still working on Tha Carter IV, the Hot Boys reunion LP and an album featuring all the artists on his Young Money label, including Mack Maine, Jae Millz, Kid Kid and Nicki Minaj.
