Ludacris, Common, Slick Rick and more have been billed to perform at this week's MAGIC Fashion Show in Las Vegas but the conference faces cutbacks.
The three-day event kicked off Tuesday (February 17) with an appearance by hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons.
The twice-yearly MAGIC fashion industry trade show featured Russell Simmons, actor Charlie Sheen and actor-comedian Chris Tucker. Simmons put in an appearance on behalf of Argyle Culture, which is one of his fashion labels. He is also the driving force behind Phat Farm urban wear. The three-day fashion industry event is being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It is reserved for fashion designers, buyers and suppliers only; the event is closed to the public. Tuesday's Official Magic Afterpary will have entertainment by Common, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh and Biz Markie. DJ Steve Aoki will be behind the decks on Wednesday at Project kickoff party. Atlanta rapper Ludacris will be alongside True Religion at LAX performing. (Las Vegas Weekly)
Despite the popularity of the bi-annual event, this year's economy has impacted its showcases.
There are signs the show, which has reported more than 100,000 attendees at past shows, has seen better days. There are no longer exhibits in the south hall nor in the parking lots and the show itself has been truncated from four days to three. The show, which consists of about a dozen sections under the umbrella MAGIC Marketplace, coincides with Project and Sourcing at MAGIC at Mandalay Bay and the Hilton, respectively. People setting up the event have weighed in their thoughts on this year's overall look.
"The show was downsized probably 50 percent, along with the shoe show that we currently finished at Mandalay Bay was probably 50 person smaller," said local teamster Adam Dziemieszko. (KTNV News)
The show's festivities are scheduled to conclude Thursday night.
