Will Smith's latest film Seven Pounds opened at No. 1 over the weekend with overseas box office sales rounding out at $19.8.

The blockbuster actor's new film failed to secure the top spot when released last month in the United States.

Smith's Seven Pounds missed No. 1 by just over $2 million as Jim Carrey's Yes Man debuted with $18.2 while Smith shelled $16 million in sales. Both were reportedly expected to bring in at least $5 million more but chart watchers cited bad weather conditions throughout the north as possible reason for the lowered profits. (SOHH)

However, overseas moviegoers helped Smith secure the top spot.

Opening in at least 11 markets and recording No. 1 rankings in four, Sony's Seven Pounds grabbed the top spot on the international boxoffice circuit during the weekend with an estimated gross of $19.8 million from 3,502 screens in 25 territories. The Will Smith vehicle from Italian director Gabriele Muccino premiered at No. 1 in Spain ($4.2 million from 308 screens) and at No. 2 in France ($3 million from 343 sites) and the U.K. ($2.4 million from 405 situations). Smith is known for his international film success.

Sony's cumed $40.8 million from Seven Pounds in international markets while still early in its run to go along with $69 million domestically. In the same frame a year ago, Smith's I Am Legend led the international pack with $28.7 million. (Variety)
