ATL-based rapper Rodney "Rocko" Hill, Jr., who is linked to singer Monica, has pleaded "no contest" to battery charges and will be placed behind bars for 48 hours.
The "Umma Do Me" hitmaker was taken in for allegedly assaulting a woman.
The DeKalb solicitor said the rapper pulled a woman's hair and struck her in the face at a local nightclub in Feb. 2007. His music career kicked off after discovering other rap talent in Atlanta.
Rocko got his start in 1999 scouting talent for indie label Triple A Records. In 2002, he signed rapper Hitman Sammy Sam, who was soon offered a deal with Universal Records. A year later, Rocko left his post at the label and launched his own record company, Rocky Road Records. He continued scouting talent for Universal, brokering deals with Young Dro and Dem Franchize Boyz. It wasn't long after working with the two acts that he started to ponder becoming a rapper himself. He was later picked up by Def Jam in October 2007.
Shakir Stewart, the senior vice president of A&R at Def Jam, contacted Rocko and persuaded him to fly to New York City to meet with the head of the famed label. "At that time I was in the process of closing a deal somewhere else but Shakir was like, 'Roc, you gotta come up here, LA Reid wants to meet with you,'" he remembers. "My first time meeting with Def Jam we closed the deal the same day. There were no negotiations. They had their mind made up. I couldn't even leave the building." (Island Records)
No information has been released on when he will be begin his jail time.
