In this interview, Notorious actor Edwin Freeman talks about playing Mister Cee, the DJ who discovered the Notorious B.I.G.

What made you decide to take on the role of Mister Cee?

I felt that is was a great opportunity to portray a man who I respect and who I am a fan of in a movie that was about a man that I respect and am a huge fan of. To be a part of a movie of this magnitude was an opportunity that I wouldn't have passed up for the world.

What role did Mister Cee play in the life of Biggie Smalls?

Mister Cee discovered Biggie and introduced him to Puff Daddy through a friend at The Source Magazine. He also served as an Associate Executive Producer for Biggie's debut album "Ready to Die".

What type of research did you do in order to help you better portray Mister Cee in the movie?

I watched videos of Mister Cee when he used to DJ for Big Daddy Kane, I listened to him on Hot 97, to make sure that I got his tone of voice correct. When portraying a real life character one of your biggest challenges is making sure you capture the essence of their existence. That's where your work as an actor comes in.

In what ways do you feel the film allows us to get a feel of who Biggie Smalls was aside from his rap career?

The film shows Biggie as a son, a husband, a father and a friend to those who knew and loved him best. We get to see his human side; prior to the film fans weren't able to see that side of him. That's what's so great about the movie.

What do you feel is a lesson that we can all learn from the life of Biggie Smalls?

Dream big and work hard. Biggie was the only child, born to a single mother in one of the worse neighborhoods in New York City and he never used his situation as a reason not to make something of his life. He had big dreams and he didn't stop until he achieved them.

If Biggie Smalls was alive today what message do you think he would give to his fans?

In his own words "Stay busy and stay working, the key to staying on top is to treat everything like it's your first project. Just stay hungry."

Notorious is being released nationwide on January 16, 2009.
