While Common's latest disc makes way for this weeks hip-hop releases, R&B makes a splash onto the charts with notable releases from Musiq Soulchild, Avant, and Brandy.
The singer recently spoke to SOHH to explain his album's aim this time around. "My goal and intention is not to escape the [neo-soul] label so much than it is that I want to add to what I do," Musiq told SOHH. "My intention is not to stop doing what you know me to do. My intention is to get you to enhance your perspective of what it is that I do or can do."
Rapper-turned-actor Common's long awaited Universal Mind Control reached No. 12 this week selling 82,600 units. Tagging Kanye West, Pharrell, Cee-Lo and Chester French as guest appearances on the album, the Chi-town rapper revealed his desire to continue making music long after this release.
"God willing, you'll get albums nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen," Common told SOHH. "I feel like a jazz musician in many ways and I wanna keep creating music. I feel like I want to be doing shows when I'm sixty something."
Another notable debut was R&B singer Brandy's Human which secured No. 15 pushing 72,900 records its opening week. Following her 2004 Atlantic Records release Afrodisiac, Brandy's Epic Records debut is led by the singles "Right Here (Departed)" and "Long Distance."
Her fifth solo project features production from Rodney Jerkins, Brian Kennedy, LaShawn Daniels and Toby Gad. Soulful singer Avant also debuted this week as his self-titled Capitol Records debut opened at No. 26 with 52,000 copies sold.
His fifth solo project follows's 2006's certified gold Director and features production by heavy hitters including Mr. Collipark, Bryan-Michael Cox, Trackmasters and more.
