Less than one week into the nomination process, hip-hop fans from around the world have already logged on to support their favorite artists, bloggers and in some cases themselves, for an Online Hip-Hop Award. SOHH caught up with some of the nominees to see what they think about their chances.
Philadelphia based soul-singer Jazmine Sullivan, who made a splash with the success of her Missy Elliot assisted first single, "Need U Bad," is rising as a major contender for the "Artist To Watch" award.
"Wow I'm happy that people appreciate my music," said Jazmine when she learned she'd been nominated. "I put my heart and my soul into everything that I do so when it's appreciated, I'm really honored."
Blitz the Ambassador, a Brooklyn-based emcee who has shared the stage with Dead Prez, Slick Rick, Akon and Rakim has been nominated for the "I Should Be A Rap Star" Award.
Blitz, who acknowledges that the internet has had a profound effect on his career, thinks that he should become a final nominee in his category because of what he's bringing to the genre.
"Hip-Hop has gotten to the point where people aren't focusing on the art of lyricism," Blitz told SOHH. "I am bringing lyricism back in its highest form...that's why I should be a finalist."
In addition to highlighting up-and-comers, the Online Hip-Hop Awards will also honor more established artists, especially those making moves on the Web. Sean "Diddy" Combs snagged some nominations for "King of The Net" for his constant stream of Diddy Blogs, which range in topic from political endorsements and high gas prices, to viral songs like his most recent internet hit "Swagger Like Puff."
Of course, the Online Hip-Hop Awards wouldn't be complete without awarding blogs and internet sites. For "Blogger of the Year," which is sure to be a hot race, some of the nominees include notorious hip-hop bloggers like Bol, Sandra Rose and Eskay of Nahright.com fame.
Eskay was happy to hear that he'd received an Online Hip-Hop Award nomination. "I wanna thank everybody who nominated me for 'Blogger of the Year,'" he said. "I appreciate the love. The nods mean a lot to me because they come from the general public, the same people who keep me going everyday."
The nomination process for the OHHA 2008 will continue until October 14th when the official nominees will be announced.
