With the release of Heltah Skeltah's highly anticipated reunion disc, D.I.R.T. (Da Incredible Rap Team) coming next month, SOHH caught up with the Brooklyn rap duo to speak about the delay behind the album, their relevancy in today's hip-hop scene and Rock and Method Man's phone etiquette issues.
After nearly ten years since their last album Magnum Force hit retail stores, the Boot Camp Clik emcees - consisting of Ruck (a.k.a. Sean Price) and Rock – blamed the long wait on scheduling problems.
"We was always in contact, you understand? It was just that our schedules, it was like, we was like the two hands on the clock," Rock said. "One was doing one thing, the other was doing the other, and when the hands met up, it was that time."
Claiming the birth of the project was a combination of their natural chemistry together and the need to put something out for the fans, Ruck explained their signature sound as being unlike anything found in today's rap climate.
"It's what we do and the music that we do, like nobody does anymore and I love that sh*t, so you know, that's why we did it," he said. "We did it for the people. We did it for us. We did it for everybody."
Taking full credit for keeping fans satisfied and interested with them, Ruck broke down the efforts he made in order to keep their names relevant in the ever-changing rap industry.
"It's because of me, man," he proclaimed. "We was all on hiatus, you know? My man Rock was trying to secure some things, but you know, he was on a major [record label], it didn't pop off for him, you know what I mean? I put the cape on him, like ‘F*ck it,'[imitates Superman theme]. I put out a mixtape. I put out two albums. I put out another mixtape and here we are. We f*cking relevant."
Speaking on a long-delayed possible collaboration with Redman and Method Man, Ruck warned fans that something could be in the works once Rock perfects his phone skills.
"It was supposed to go down but Method Man and Rock's phone etiquette is horrible, man, so it never went down," he jokingly admitted. "We gonna get it right soon as they phone etiquette get better."
Heltah Skeltah will be shooting two music videos this week for the singles "Everything's Heltah Skeltah" and "So Damn Tough."
After the duo's album drops next month, Rock plans on putting the finishing touches on his group project Random Axe and going on tour with fellow BK rapper Ill Bill, while Rock is gearing up for the release of his movie "Shell Shock the DVD" along with several other movie roles.
D.I.R.T. hits shelves September 30 on Duck Down Records.
