Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz‘s new Based On A T.R.U. Story is destined for the top with first-week sales projections up to 140,000.
Based on one-day estimates, Chainz should easily land atop his retail music competition.
Barry Weiss, Steve Bartels and company are as hot as the weather this summer, looking at a third hip-hop–and fourth overall–chart-topper on tap. Following Justin Bieber, then Nas and Rick Ross, comes Def Jam College Park, GA, rapper 2 Chainz’s Based on a T.R.U. Story, which is on target for a #1 debut next Tuesday, with sales in the 130-140k range. (HITS Daily Double)
Recently, Chainz compared his new LP’s music to NBA star LeBron James‘ 2011-2012 championship season with the Miami Heat.
“Based on a T.R.U. Story can be the soundtrack for maybe what LeBron [James] went through. Being in a situation, thinking you’re gonna be in a situation, striving in that situation, struggling in that situation, having faith like, ‘Let me try this again, but just do it a different way’ … and then getting good results. I feel like it’s a soundtrack for a championship team, a soundtrack for somebody that’s winning or goin’ through ups and downs.” (MTV)
Last week, the rapper discussed a lack of originality coming from artists these days.
“I just think we should make more original compositions, so we can keep music moving forward,” he said. “When 10 people do the same song, I don’t know how you can say who’s the best. After so many people do it, who really cares which one was the best song when it came from someone else’s original idea.” (Rap-Up)
Young Money rap star Lil Wayne recently reflected on Chainz’s buzzing popularity.
“I don’t know if the A-Town know but that’s my friend. [laughs] That’s not my rap buddy, that’s my real friend,” Wayne told DJ Drama in an interview, referring to 2 Chainz. “I knew that guy when he didn’t know how to make no words rhyme. You know what I mean? [laughs] That’s my real friend, I know him. He’s ‘Tity Boi Put It In The Air’ to me. … And all of a sudden this guy is killing it. He’s murdered the show. … It’s weird to me, I’m sorry, it’s weird. He always gives me the upmost respect. He always gives me so many props.” (Hot 107.9)
