Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz is setting the record straight on his relationship with G.O.O.D. Music and why he is not, yet, officially inked to Kanye West‘s growing music empire.
Despite the music collaborations and appearances together, Chainz said he does not have a deal with Team Yeezy.
“I’m not officially signed, paperwork-wise, to G.O.O.D. Music. But I have a great rapport with ‘Ye. He called me before Watch the Throne came out. I’m an only child. I’ve got trust issues. So I don’t have a best friend, a brother, sister–nothing. Stuff was happening in my life that I couldn’t tell nobody. I didn’t have anybody in my life that I could tell, like, “‘Ye just called me.” (Complex)
The artist formerly known as Tity Boi also said his past run with Ludacris‘ Disturbin’ Tha Peace made him more wary about getting signed to fellow entertainers.
“I’ve talked to ‘Ye 1,000 times about trying to make this situation work for the both of us, so it won’t feel like anyone is getting used or anything. I’m in a position in life where I like talking about things like that. I came from a situation with DTP, being under Luda, where I got a phobia. Sometimes when an artist signs another artist, they’re so worried about themselves. And with ‘Ye, he helps everybody.” (Complex)
Chainz and Yeezy’s new “Birthday Song” premiered online Monday (July 23) afternoon.
Everyone knows the words to “Happy Birthday,” but Kanye West and 2 Chainz have a new version for your ears. “Birthday Song,” released Monday, is the latest bit of readily accessible music from the G.O.O.D. Music chief and his newest protege. The song continues Kanye’s rapid sprint away from the emotional lyrics and lush beats of his last disc, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Like his other recent efforts (“Mercy,” “New God Flow” and “Way Too Cold”), “Birthday Song” centers around vague boasts and not entirely feminist lyrics (“All I want for my birthday is a big booty girl”). In May, the rapper denied reports which claimed he officially hooked up with G.O.O.D. Music.
“He just said I’m good, like I’m ill. But we was talking and I think I was jeopardizing my brand sometimes by doing the homeboy special,” Chainz said, referring to his knack for hooking artists up with guest features. “So I think he felt like we should just put that out there that we ain’t doing no more of that — I would have done almost anything a couple months ago, and it was all about really reaching out because I still will, I’m still grounded, but it made sense for me to slow down a little bit being that I got an album coming out August 14th. I’m still working on that — I’m just trying to focus on 2 Chainz a little more.” (Bootleg Kev)
