Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz has plenty of reasons to smile these days after addressing his new Based On A T.R.U. Story solo album’s first-week sales projections and its chart-topping potential.
Rather than gloat about his sales, Chainz reflected on the amount of effort he put into the long-awaited LP.
“I’m looking at it like I worked my a** off,” he said in an interview with DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God. “It’s not about the record. I’m not even in tune with what the charts are doing. When it first happens I get geeked and then I go back to work. I just know I’ve done, just this year alone, I’ve done two tours with two people I feel like are major artists with diverse fan bases — I’m just looking at what I did on my own prior to doing tours. Just going around kissing babies, shaking hands, and just really trying to figure out the connection with the fans. So will I be disappointed if I only do one-something? No, but at the same time I just got high expectations for myself.” (“The Breakfast Club”)
The new release has even received support from rap star Lil Wayne who sidelined his new Dedication 4 mixtape for him.
“I know I was supposed to drop that Dedication 4 tonight – but listen, my homeboy 2 Chainz just dropped his album yesterday. That’s my real, real, real good homeboy right there and I refuse to put any attention on me when the spotlight, everybody’s eyes, everybody’s attention and everybody’s focus should be on my n*gga 2 Chainz’s album Based On A T.R.U. Story. So therefore I ain’t giving you b*tches Dedication 4 yet. I’ma give it to ya’ll in another week or so. But I ain’t gonna lie, I ain’t finished that motherf*cker. I’ve been skating and sh*t, falling and sh*t and all that type of sh*t, but I’ll give it to you like, next week. Stop trippin’ pimp.” (Bread Over Bed)
The album is currently en route to topple its competition next week.
Barry Weiss, Steve Bartels and company are as hot as the weather this summer, looking at a third hip-hop–and fourth overall–chart-topper on tap. Following Justin Bieber, then Nas and Rick Ross, comes Def Jam College Park, GA, rapper 2 Chainz’s Based on a T.R.U. Story, which is on target for a #1 debut next Tuesday, with sales in the 130-140k range. (HITS Daily Double)
Recently, Chainz compared his new LP’s music to NBA star LeBron James‘ 2011-2012 championship season with the Miami Heat.
“Based on a T.R.U. Story can be the soundtrack for maybe what LeBron [James] went through. Being in a situation, thinking you’re gonna be in a situation, striving in that situation, struggling in that situation, having faith like, ‘Let me try this again, but just do it a different way’ … and then getting good results. I feel like it’s a soundtrack for a championship team, a soundtrack for somebody that’s winning or goin’ through ups and downs.” (MTV)
