After criticizing select rappers last month for remixing his records, Atlanta’s 2 Chainz has stepped up to put some more context into his highly-publicized tweet.
Standing by his remark, Chainz said originality is at stake when too many artists remix a hit.
“I just think we should make more original compositions, so we can keep music moving forward,” he said. “When 10 people do the same song, I don’t know how you can say who’s the best. After so many people do it, who really cares which one was the best song when it came from someone else’s original idea.” (Rap-Up)
In late July, the rapper hopped on Twitter and called out lazy emcees.
“Everybody alwayz REMIX my songs. how bout u lazy artists, try 2kom up wit sumthn original, instead of replacing my words wit urs. MUSIC is fun,” he tweeted July 27th.
“RT @ToFlashy4U: @justinbieber ft @2chainz Boyfriend remix is poppin I just heard it on Music choice #Swaggy” (2 Chainz’s Twitter)
Last fall, fellow Atlanta rapper T.I. vowed to remix any hot record.
A while back the Grand Hustle general mentioned that he might be on Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s “N*ggas in Paris (Remix).” When asked about the status of that record, T.I. said, “Well, I officially have recorded my verse. And I haven’t spoken to ‘Ye. I let ‘Ye hear it . I think ‘Ye let Jay hear it as well. I don’t think a determination has been made on whether or not it is going to be official. But if it’s not official, it will be unofficial. It will be heard one way or another. I will assure you that.” But that’s not all. T.I. wants to add his vocals to more songs. “I’m looking for some more records to jump on,” he said. “That’s what I’m doin’ right now. I’m commandeering hit records right now. I’m hijacking hit records. If you got a hit I’m on it.” (XXL Mag)
A few months ago, Young Money star Drake reflected on Chainz’s current rise to fame.
“Like I say in the song, ‘Me and Chainz go way back,’ that’s no lie,” Drake said in an interview referring to their “No Lie” collaboration. “I spent a lot of my early days with Young Money on the road with 2 Chainz. We definitely built a rapport. It’s great to see him at the top of his game right now. The world loves him and it’s well deserved. He’s a hardworking guy.” (MTV)
